Exec. Producer — Post-Production / Technology / Investment
Richard Scott was raised in two different worlds, seeped in music and the arts on one side and the sciences on the other. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to two University of Pittsburgh scientists, he studied music from a very young age, developed a lifelong love for science and technology, and began acting in theater while a teenager. With interests spanning physics, engineering, medicine, and the performing arts, Richard attended in-depth extracurricular courses on each throughout high school.
Richard fell in love with the process of acting in difficult characters at the age of fifteen when he took on the role of troubled prodigal son Henry in a performance of Thornton Wilder’s The Skin Of Our Teeth, where his performance was so realistic that his parents were given psychologist referrals after one show. He spent the next summer at a Pittsburgh area theater acting in A Midsummer Nights Dream while building sets and assisting with lighting. He then capped off his teenage years in a grueling acting program at Pittsburgh’s CAPA, one of America’s highest-ranked performing arts high schools according to US News & World Report.
In 1995, Richard moved to California to study acting and computer science at San Francisco State University (SFSU). While there he met producer James Duval and director Mark Lillig and the three began what would become a long partnership together. With an extensive training in both theater production and computer systems, Richard quickly learned the tools of film production and coordinated the necessary computer and camera systems for their motion pictures and music videos.
While in college, Richard took on a string of increasingly ambitious technology projects, including overhauling the network at International Contact, a large multimedia translation company; running the prepress and design department at My Printer, a well-known Berkeley offset printing bureau; creating the Internet Public Library’s chat and reference system for the University of Michigan; and programming web interfaces for an online educational community at Stanford Research Institute. And while still a freshman, he was already administrating an internationally popular online community for his university.
Richard formed Independent Image Entertainment (IIE) with James Duval, Mark Lillig, and Tyler Ross in Oakland, CA. For IIE, Richard put together its post-production and information systems and created its marketing materials and online presence. Richard led the company’s graphic design department which created web sites, print materials, and album artwork for clients in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Oakland. Under Richard’s guidance, IIE’s designs and visual effects were able to reach the production value of a major studio and the recognition of top Hollywood players.
In 2005, Richard formed the Los Angeles studio Continuum Pictures along with producers Danny Torres, James Duval, Scott Hayman, Tyler Ross, and Mark Lillig for the purpose of creating studio-level motion pictures. Like with IIE, Richard put together and managed the company’s information and post-production systems, created its digital cinematography workflow, and oversees its graphic design, Web, DVD mastering, motion graphics, and imaging needs.
On set, Richard has run several different departments over the years, including sound, camera, lighting, and overall set management. Richard was the Director of Photography for the IIE films Wrestling Days and Troubadours, and was the sound engineer for a series of award-winning shorts produced by Filmplane Entertainment.
As an actor, Richard has appeared in several motion pictures, including leading roles in the quirky thriller No Strings Attached and the upcoming Filmplane / Continuum Pictures crime drama Convict.
Richard is also continuing his family’s tradition of philanthropy by assisting those nonprofits he believes in such as Pittsburgh’s Regional Equity Monitoring Project and other outreach and educational programs.
Richard currently resides in Van Nuys, California.
